What kind of lone visitor is this?

I've never seen just one, usually in flocks. This one announced himself or herself predawn with calling. Wore itself out the rest of the day calling and calling. Swam and then walked on the ice. stayed another day and then was gone. I never saw it in the air, only in the water or on the ice.
